Hydration means replacing the water the body loses through urine, breathing, sweat and stool. Needs vary with body size, food, climate, activity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, illness and health conditions. What counts toward hydration?
Plain water is a convenient default, but fluid also comes from milk, tea, coffee, soups, fruits, vegetables and other foods and drinks. Why fixed targets mislead
Public reference values describe total intake across populations; they are not mandatory bottle quotas. A person working outside in humid heat may need far more than someone resting in a cool room. Kidney, heart or liver conditions can require an individual fluid limit.
Drink regularly with meals and according to thirst, then increase access during heat, exercise, fever, vomiting or diarrhoea. Children, older adults and people dependent on carers may need planned offers because thirst or communication can be less reliable.
Signs of dehydration
Possible early signs include thirst, dry mouth, reduced urine, darker urine, headache, fatigue and light-headedness. More serious dehydration can involve confusion, fainting, rapid heartbeat, inability to keep fluids down or very little urination. These signs deserve prompt assessment, particularly in infants, older adults and illness.
Heat illness can progress quickly. Move to a cool place, begin appropriate cooling and seek emergency help for confusion, collapse, seizures or very high body temperature.
Do you need electrolytes?
For ordinary daily activity and shorter workouts, water and regular food are usually enough. Prolonged heavy sweating can increase sodium loss. Commercial sports drinks may provide carbohydrate and sodium but can also contain substantial sugar; their marketing does not make them necessary for every walk or gym visit.
Vomiting and diarrhoea may require an oral rehydration solution with a specific glucose-and-electrolyte balance. Random mixtures of salt and water can be unsafe. Use a recognised product or clinical recipe and obtain advice for children or severe symptoms.
Can you drink too much water?
Yes. Rapid excessive intake can dilute blood sodium, causing nausea, headache, confusion, seizures and, rarely, death. Do not force large volumes beyond thirst during endurance exercise or wellness challenges. More is not a detox strategy.

A practical routine
Keep safe drinking water accessible. Start meals with a drink, carry a refillable bottle when away from reliable water and adjust for weather and exertion. During exercise, learn your normal response rather than copying an influencers exact volume.
Observe patterns over several days. Recurrent intense thirst or urination can have medical causes and should not simply be treated by endlessly increasing water.
Special situations
Pregnancy and breastfeeding change needs. Fever, diarrhoea and vomiting increase losses. Diuretics and some other medicines alter fluid balance. People with fluid restrictions must follow their clinical plan even when generic wellness advice recommends more water.
